Chapter Thirty-Three

Natalya found herself holding the gun in her hand.

One thing was certain, she wasn’t going to get any more answers inside this bank vault. She loaded the cash and two passports into her North Face backpack, and then looked at the handgun. She could hardly walk out of the bank carrying it.

Should she even take it with her?

Weren’t there strict laws about owning or carrying a weapon in France?

Did it matter? She needed to protect herself… from what exactly? Her mom hadn’t even told her who she was running from! Who was she supposed to shoot? How could she even work out who the enemy was?

She drew a deep breath, slowly exhaled.

Her mom might just be suffering from some sort of paranoid delusion. Was she willing to leave her entire old life behind on the weight of a note from her mother, who she’d known for years suffered from anxiety and attacks of paranoia?

Natalya tilted her head to the side, considering her decision.

Was her mother crazy?

Or did this vindicate everything?

Two million euros certainly went a long way to suggesting her mother was involved in something illegal. She was a glacial scientist, with no connection to her own parents back in Russia. It was impossible to accept that she’d managed to save so much money with financial diligence and frugal living.

Okay, Natalya could work out all these things, she thought. But first, she would give her mother the benefit of doubt, and run.

She could get out of Grenoble, hire a car, and disappear anywhere within the EU. Or she could catch an uber to the first airport and hop on an international flight to the US. Then she could just hire a car and just keep driving. Go on a classic American road trip, traveling like a backpacker until she worked out what she wanted to do.

She stared at her cell phone.

It contained all her contacts.

Her friends, work colleagues, emails, social media apps, everything. Her entire life. She could always return for it if everything turned out to be fine.

She carefully placed the phone in the safety deposit box.

Then she looked at the gun in her hand.

She could hardly walk out of the bank carrying it. She thought seriously about leaving it in the safety deposit box, but what good would that do her? If she really was in trouble, it might save her life. So, should she put it in the backpack? How will that save her life if she gets attacked? No, better to have it in the pocket at the front of her hoodie. Then it wouldn’t stand out, and if she needed to, she could always use it.

Natalya returned the drawer to its alcove, locking it once again with the key. The green light, returned to red. She picked up the wall-mounted phone and the vault’s heavy door opened electronically.

Natalya thanked the bank manager who wished her good day. Then she walked out of the bank, heading north toward the Isère River and more importantly, public transport.
